There are a number of adverse effects associated with niacin as cholesterol-lowering therapy.
- Flushing
- Occurs particularly with the immediate-release formulation.
- Elevations in Uric Acid
- Can occur and should be closely monitored in patients who are predisposed to gout.
- Hepatotoxicity
- Occurs at higher doses and is more pronounced with the extended-release formulation than with the immediate-release formulation. Patients with gallbladder disease or a history of jaundice, liver disease, or peptic ulcer disease should be monitored closely.
- Increases in Blood Glucose
- Occurs in diabetic patients, who should be closely monitored. An adjustment in diet and/or hypoglycemic therapy may be necessary.
- Hypophosphatemia
- Occurs rarely.
- Reduction in Platelets
- Occurs rarely.
